I am delighted to have the opportunity to review the key events and achievements for CHIVA during a busy and successful year in 2008. Dr Hermione Lyall retired as CHIVA Chair at the conference in May 2008, having been Chair of the Association for the last 3 years, and I would like to acknowledge Dr Lyall’s significant contribution to CHIVA. Thanks also go to the Officers and Executive Committee for their work during the year and to our sponsors and conference exhibitors for their support.
We held our 2nd Annual Conference this year in Liverpool, which was a great success, attracting over 160 delegates. The conference focused on ‘Planning for the long term and improving the management of children with HIV in the UK’. This included taking a look at the first-line treatment and vaccination options for children with HIV as well as a debate on whether third-trimester repeat HIV tests should become routine for all pregnant women.
In addition, CHIVA, as customary, held parallel sessions in collaboration with BHIVA at the British HIV Association Autumn Conference. This was attended by over 75 delegates and focused on ‘Children and Young People newly diagnosed with HIV in 2008’. CHIVA also collaborated very successfully with BHIVA on the ‘Don’t Forget the Children’ consensus conference held in December 2008 with over 150 invited attendees.
The CHIVA website has become a valuable asset to the Association. It provides information about the Association and its activities, including details of conferences, registration information and details on audits and guidelines. Following the receipt of funds from the Department of Health Section 64 budget, work commenced in 2008 on its redevelopment and the site will be re-launched in 2009.
There are a number of paediatric protocols, treatments, trials and guidelines, all of which are available on the CHIVA website and these cover testing, follow-up, treatment, adherence, disclosure, complications, outcome, sexual health, MTCT, PEP, PEPSE and PREP, young people and looked after children. In 2008 the new BHIVA/CHIVA guidelines for the management of HIV infection in pregnant women (2008) were published. CHIVA also consulted on the UK National Guidelines for HIV Testing 2008, led by BHIVA.
Work has been completed on three CHIVA audits this year: the results of the disclosure audit were written up and submitted to AIDS Care; the adherence audit has closed and been written up; and the mortality audit closed at the end of 2008 and the results were presented as an oral abstract at the ESPID Conference in June 2009. In addition, the joint BAAF, NCB and CHIVA guidelines for testing of looked after children were published in 2008.
A number of other projects were also developed in 2008: a CHIVA working group has been developing Standards for HIV Clinical Care for Children and Young People with HIV, to be published in 2009; planning began on a CHIVA newsletter, to be launched in 2009; and a series of regional meetings, supported by BMS, are also in development for 2009. In addition, CHIVA has allocated leads from amongst the Executive Committee to work on commissioning, training and standards; networks and regional meetings; young people and the voluntary sector, professional groups and out link with the CHIVA Africa project (formerly known as CHIVA-KZN).
I have had a busy half-year as Chair of CHIVA and I am sure that you will agree with me that the future holds great things for the Association.
