Camp leaders
The camp leader application process is now closed for 2012, details of the 2013 scheme will be posted here in January 2013.
Below is a bit more detail about the role of the camp leader and what we are looking for.
What is a Camp leader?
Each year for our summer support camp we recruit and train a group of 18 – 24 year old HIV+ young people to act as peer mentors at camp. As well as mentoring the young people, they will help with the daily running of the camp. We are recruiting 10 camp leaders. We want to have a team of fun, energetic and responsible people. Whilst being a camp leader will be a lot of fun, it is also a responsibility. You will help us to run the camp and have responsibility for the health, safety and well-being of the young people who attend.
The qualities which we feel are important for camp leaders are:
- Being committed and enthusiastic
- Sensitivity and ability to empathise with other people
- Confidence to talk with children and young people about HIV
- Having a strong commitment to equality and non discrimination on grounds of
race, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, gender, sexuality or disability
The skills and abilities which we feel are important for camp leaders are:
- Excellent communication skills
- An ability to motivate and inspire others
- An ability to work in a team
- Confidence in building rapport with young people
- Good organisational skills
- Able to be a role model for other young people living with HIV
Camp leaders do not need to have worked with young people before, as they will be given lots of support, information and training to take on the role.
It is important to remember that as a camp leader you are in a very different role to if you were a young person at camp.
What would I gain from being a camp leader?
You will be working alongside other like-minded HIV+ young people with plenty of opportunities for fun.
