
The CHIVA/KZN Support & Mentoring Initiative is a collaboration between CHIVA, the KwaZulu Natal Department of Health and the University of KwaZulu Natal in support of the National Antiretroviral Roll-Out Programme begun in 2004 to provide universal access to treatment for all HIV positive South Africans. The Initiative aims to share clinical knowledge and experience with colleagues in KwaZulu Natal to help them facilitate antiretroviral treatment of children with HIV across the KwaZulu Natal Province.
To date, 47 of the 55 accredited Provincial Hospital ARV sites have been visited. 71 CHIVA members comprising of doctors, clinical nurse specialists, dieticians, pharmacists and psychologists have made 178 visits to KwaZulu Natal, amounting to 191 working weeks. 452 formal protected teaching sessions have reached approximately 4000 attendees and over 3000 children have been seen with KZN colleagues.
The CHIVA/ KZN Support & Mentoring Initiative was the recipient of the Mail and Guardian Investing in Life Award for Independent foundations and Not-for-Profit Organisations in 2005.

OVERVIEW
The Children’s HIV Association of the UK and Ireland (CHIVA): An umbrella organisation of health care professionals experienced in the treatment of children with antiretroviral medication, and committed to providing holistic long-term management of children infected with HIV.
The CHIVA/KZN Support & Mentoring Initiative: Begun in September 2004, the Initiative is a collaborative project between CHIVA, the University of KwaZulu Natal and the Department of Health of KwaZulu Natal in support of the National Antiretroviral (ARV) Roll-Out Programme begun in 2004 to provide universal access to treatment with antiretroviral therapy for all HIV positive South Africans.
Initiative Aim: The Initiative aims to share knowledge and experience in the treatment of children with HIV and their long-term management by providing practical support and mentorship to help facilitate antiretroviral treatment (ART) of children with HIV across the KwaZulu Natal province.

Activity: The Initiative coordinates the visits and activities
of multi-disciplinary
comprising doctors, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists and psychologists
from the UK and
Work schedules include workshops, seminars, ward rounds and clinic visits,
informal small
sessions and one-on-one teaching. A Durban-based co-ordinator assesses
the sites and
individual work schedules for each CHIVA volunteer based on local needs
and requests.
