Introduction

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to the 2nd Annual CHIVA Conference which we are delighted to be holding in collaboration with the Children’s HIV National Network (CHINN). The Conference is taking place at the recently opened Arena and Convention Centre in Liverpool and we are pleased that Dr Andrew Riordan has been able to accept our invitation to host our conference.

I would like to thank all of our speakers who have agreed to present their work at this conference.

We are excited to include within the programme CHIVA/CHINN sessions identifying how we can improve the management of children affected by HIV here in the UK. This will include taking a closer look at our first-line treatment and vaccination options. In addition, we will discuss the development of resistance to HIV in the UK.

To conclude our conference, the second CHIVA debate will focus on preventing new vertical transmission of HIV and specifically, ‘whether third trimester repeat HIV tests should become routine for all pregnant women’.

We feel sure that these sessions should prove to be very topical as well as raise some interesting points to be debated and discussed.

The CHIVA AGM will be held following lunch and prior to the afternoon plenary sessions and I would encourage all members to attend this meeting as it provides a forum to present any points which they may have to the CHIVA officers and members of the Executive Committee. I am delighted to inform you that CHIVA is now a registered charity.

I hope that you will all enjoy the Conference and find it of relevance to both your educational and your practical needs.

Best wishes.
