Conference Steering Committee.

A one-day national conference that has been scheduled shortly after World AIDS Day in December which will focus on what should be done about HIV testing the children of HIV-seropositive parents attending adult HIV services.

This is a very important and urgent issue and that the time is right to discuss what effective action can be taken at a national level to help reduce the unnecessary and avoidable morbidity and mortality amongst undiagnosed HIV-positive children. It is believed that the number of undiagnosed HIV-positive children can be reduced rapidly by appropriate policy changes and the dissemination of best practice.

The conference is intended to bring together relevant groups and stakeholders to understand the extent of the problem, its underlying causes and consequences, and develop a consensus strategy to overcome barriers to testing and diagnosis in this vulnerable group. In addition, the conference will include specific time dedicated to open discussion in order to define best practice across the sectors and make firm policy recommendations.

Stakeholders include clinicians and healthcare workers in adult and paediatric HIV services; HIV voluntary sector organisations; HIV-positive peer support workers; social services; child protection organisations; families and individuals living with HIV; epidemiologists, policy makers and representatives from the Department of Health.
