Fostering & care

There may come a time when your child needs to be looked after with the help of children’s social care services. This could be due to your poor health, or because you and your family are facing problems that you can’t overcome at that time.

A big worry for HIV positive parents is confidentiality – who will be told about their HIV status, or their child’s, and how can they have control over this information.

This area aims to prepare you for what to expect and to help you know your rights about either your own, or your child’s HIV, in this situation.

In this area the topics covered are, what foster care is and what it means for a child to be in the social care system, keeping yours and your child's HIV status confidential, discrimination in the care system and thinking about the future.
