HIV FRIENDLY SCHOOLS
CHIVA has been running its ‘Educate Yourself: Working Towards HIV Friendly Schools’ campaign since 2015. The campaign seeks to raise awareness of the pastoral care needs of children who are living with or affected by HIV in UK schools.
Please find our latest resources, including HIV in schools guidance, and an education toolkit for teaching HIV, including lesson plans, at this link.
Educate Yourself
Young people living with HIV participated in creating this two-minute film aimed at teachers, explaining in their own words why HIV friendly schools are important. If you work in education, please consider sharing this film with your colleagues and downloading the guidance document below.
Guidance
Chiva worked with many partners from education and the charity sector to update guidance originally developed by the National Children’s Bureau. We encourage education professionals to use the full guidance document.
Parliamentary event
Chiva held a parliamentary event to launch the updated guidance. Young people and speakers from education and health highlighted the importance of this campaign.
Future plans
Chiva hopes to work with schools and health providers in areas with the highest prevalence of paediatric HIV. We want to support schools to become HIV friendly so that pupils living with HIV feel able to share this information safely.
