Health Care Decisions
As your child grows up you need to prepare for the transfer of their health care over to them. This may feel uncomfortable, as with letting go of other aspects of your child’s life. It is important to remember that they need to learn to live with and manage HIV throughout their life and to have a long, fruitful life, they need to build a positive relationship with their HIV.
When your child begins to show greater understanding of HIV they need to make decisions. Your child’s health care team will expect to start letting them have a say in the decisions about their health care. This will help your child develop the skills they need to make bigger decisions later on.
As with all other areas covered here the most important thing you can do is to develop an open and trusting relationship with your child. If they feel that you are available and that you listen to them, you are more likely to be able to support them. Even if at times you feel they are not sharing with you or asking questions, if they know you are there and willing, they will come to you when they need to.
