Sharing and Understanding
My mum told me that she was HIV positive when I was 16 years old. She had just returned from a family weekend for people/families with HIV. She asked me if I knew what HIV was and then told me she was there for me to talk to and if I wanted to talk to someone else she could put me in contact with people.
Finding this out made me understand so many things. Why she had to give up her nursing, the times when she had been sick, etc. I kept this to myself and didn’t speak about it to anyone except in my prayers to God. Then when I was 18 I was living with people from different countries/cultures and I shared this with them as I trusted them. This was very helpful and a great support and encouragement to me. At 21, I got involved in social work support for children as a volunteer and I was pleased to support and be supported by people in similar situations. I am glad to have such a lovely family and support unit of friends and that I can support others too.
