Empower Students: End HIV Stigma
This education toolkit, including guidance and lesson plans, was developed with young people living with HIV. It gives teachers the tools to educate students on HIV in an engaging way and inspire them to become the generation that ends HIV stigma.
Many of the young people who use Chiva’s services describe negative experiences when being taught about HIV in UK schools. They describe times where they have heard inaccurate information about HIV, such as about transmission.
Young people living with HIV can feel powerless in these situations and are fearful to speak out because of the stigma and discrimination they may face.
The toolkit helps address these issues. It is intended to be used alongside a screening of our award-winning short film ‘Life Growing Up’, which provides insights into the lived experiences of young people growing up with HIV in the UK.

World AIDS Day 2023
For this year’s World AIDS Day (Friday 1 December), we want to ensure as many teachers as possible are talking about HIV and helping to combat stigma through education.

HIV in Schools Guidance
We have also developed guidance about HIV in schools, in collaboration with the National Children’s Bureau. This is a guide for teachers and schools to help them ensure that any pupil who shares information about their HIV diagnosis will receive the appropriate support, whilst confidentiality is respected.
We can also be contacted directly by schools for advice, support and training if they have a child in their school that has told them about their HIV.
