The latest report from CHARS (Children’s HIV and AIDS Reporting System), covering those seen in HIV paediatric care between July 2023 and January 2025, is now published! A few key findings:

  • The number of children and young people living with HIV in paediatric care remains low and appears to have stabilised, with 302 in active paediatric care in 2023-2025.
  • 44.0% of those are aged 15 to 19 years, so are expected to transition to adult care in the coming years
  • 98.0% were on ART at their last appointment, with most of those on a 3+ drug regimen (96.0%)
  • 90.7% of children and young people on ART had a viral load less than 200 copies/mL, and 77.7% had a Stage 1 infection based on CD4 count
  • From July 2023 to January 2025, 54 children and young people newly presented for care in England, representing an increase from only 36 new presentations between January 2020 and June 2023. 41 of these 54 were already diagnosed and on ART abroad prior to arrival in England.
