Chiva’s first storybook published to help children understand how to live well with HIV
Chiva has launched its first ever children’s storybook for children who are growing up living with perinatally acquired HIV.
A child living with HIV needs to know what is happening to them so they can understand how to keep themselves well and not feel scared or confused. Chiva guidance recommends telling children about their HIV at the age of six, if possible. At this stage, children should not have come across HIV or any incorrect facts about it, so they can be more accepting of it as a health condition.
In this story you’ll meet Grace, her family, her friend Bianca and her colourful parakeet, Gigi. Grace, her parents and Bianca are all living with HIV. Through their journey, this book introduces HIV to young children in a way that is accessible, affirming and honest. Grace, Gigi and HIV is a gentle, heart-warming story that helps children to understand HIV and to talk to their family and clinic team with confidence.
Parents or carers of a child living with HIV can get support from their healthcare team – or a Chiva staff member – when it comes to telling a child about their HIV for the first time. The new book is accompanied by some HIV explanation cards to support those conversations.
