What is the Chiva Youth Committee (CYC)?

The Chiva Youth Committee is a vibrant, creative group of young people who help shape Chiva’s work. Formed in 2010, the committee works closely with Chiva staff, the Trustee Board and the Steering Group to ensure young people’s voices are central to everything we do.

All members are 13–17 years old and living with HIV, with up to 14 members being involved at any one time.

Our Purpose

  1. To ensure that Chiva’s projects, campaigns and resources reflect the real experiences of children and young people living with HIV.
  2. To bring together young people from across the UK to represent their peers and amplify the voices of all children and young people living with HIV.

How the CYC Makes an Impact

  • Reviewing Chiva’s work and influencing new developments at regular committee meetings.
  • Collaborating with partner organisations to strengthen campaigns, speak at conferences and engage with policymakers.
  • Leading and joining projects that promote better awareness and understanding of HIV.

What does being a member involve?

Committee members are invited to:

  • Attend two overnight, in-person residentials each year, held during school holidays or weekends.
  • Join the annual Chiva Conference, usually held on a school day in March or April.
  • Take part in monthly online zoom meetings.
  • Get involved in additional projects that interest them. These could be outside of the UK (European or International projects).

Each member typically holds their position for around two years.

Applications are now open for new members to join the CYC. Applications close on Friday 25 September 2026. Successful applicants will begin joining in with CYC activities from December.

Achievements

Conferences

The CYC has contributed to a range of national and international events, sharing youth perspectives on HIV and healthcare:

  • In July 2026, one member presented at the Zero HIV Stigma Day event run by NAZ Project London, speaking on navigating stigma within peer groups.
  • At the 2026 Chiva Conference, eight members delivered a youth symposium focused on the importance of inclusive clinic appointments.
  • In June 2025, two members spoke at the Bristol Adolescent Health Conference.
  • In July 2024, CYC members presented at the 25th International HIV & AIDS Conference in Munich, Germany.

Research & Policy

The CYC plays an active role in shaping research and policy across the HIV sector

  • In December 2025, three members contributed to HIV Outcomes’ advocacy toolkit research, examining how gaps in health and social systems limit equitable access to care across the HIV field.
  • The committee has also led internal Chiva research exploring young people’s experiences in HIV clinics, with a particular focus on Quality of Life outcome measures.
  • The CYC have regularly contributed to research conducted by students.

Resources

The CYC often advises on, or co‑produces. resources that support young people living with HIV and strengthen public understanding. Recent projects include:

  • Safe With Me (2024) –  with input from one CYC member, this short film tells the story of two young people who connect at Chiva’s F2B camp.
  • My Medicine My Health (2023) – CYC members collaborated with aidsmap to create a written resource answering common questions young people may have about HIV and medication.
  • Don’t Listen to My HIV, Listen to Me (2023) – a five‑episode podcast series created by CYC members exploring healthcare, mental health, relationships and stigma.
  • Education Toolkit (2021) – co‑produced by the CYC to support teachers delivering HIV‑inclusive PSHE lessons to tackle HIV stigma in school.
  • Paris (2021) – a short film developed by the CYC in BSL to raise awareness of HIV within the deaf community.

Partnership work

The CYC welcomes collaboration and can be contacted through Chiva’s Participation Officer. 

  • CYC members annually attend Parliament to meet with the All Parliamentary group on HIV/AIDS (APPG).

Previous partnerships include:

  • Welsh National Opera – schools‑based work as part of a touring project.
  • Think Before You Ink – exploring the training and support needs of tattoo artists around blood‑borne viruses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply to be a CYC member?

Applications open every summer, in alignment with our F2B summer camp. To apply, fill out the form on this webpage or contact our Participation Officer Teyanna directly.

How are CYC members selected?

Selection focuses on ensuring a diverse group of young people from across the UK are represented.

Is travel and accommodation covered for residentials and events?

Chiva covers travel, accommodation and food costs for all residential meetings and events.

Can CYC members take part anonymously?

Young people’s privacy is always protected. Members can choose how publicly they want to be involved, and Chiva ensures confidentiality at all times.

Do CYC members need previous experience in advocacy or public speaking?

No. Many members join with no prior experience. Chiva provides training and opportunities to build confidence and skills.

Do CYC members receive support during their involvement?

Yes. Members are supported by Chiva’s Participation Officer.

What if I’m older than 17, Can I still apply?

The CYC is only for those aged 13-17. If you are 18 or older, you can apply for our Chiva Young Adult Committee (CYAC), which is a new committee for 18-25 year olds.
